So, what matters then?
-An exhibition project of the students of the Academie Beeldende Kunsten and the Universiteit Maastricht -
We have reached a time in which no one knows anymore what art actually is. By now even art critics have pronounced art to have ended. It appears that there are no longer any criteria left to tell art from regular objects, let alone distinguish good art from bad art. The art world has turned into a free playground where basically anything goes. So, what matters then?
In this project, the last year art theory students of the Universiteit Maastricht and the autonomous fine art students of the Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht have come together to find out about what art is these days. How does artistic practice face the theoretical confusion?
The outcome will be the exhibition ´So, what matters then?’. In this show eight artists show what still matters to them in art. Every work automatically embodies such a declaration on the meaning of art. Every work is a statement of what still counts for the artist in the moment of artistic creation. Every work is personally evocative.
‘So, what matters then?’ will give the observer the chance to contemplate about the variety of art these days. There will be photography, painting, sculpture, installation and video. The artworks can be concerned with environmental and political issues, but they can just as well be inspired by other art forms, such as music, or reflect the artist’s personal life. Thus, ‘So, what matters then?’ is an open invitation to reconsider one’s stereotypes on art and eventually come to cherish the great variety in the contemporary art world. It will be an encounter with the young generation’s engagement in meaningful artistic practice that is hopefully going to inspire further discourse and reflection.

On the 14th of June at 17:00, we want you, the ones who are used to military time and those who are not, to come at 5pm, in the Hotel de Ossekop, to enjoy yourselves and the artworks. Yes we do.
We are students and artists, who would like to invite you to our exhibition. Yes we would.
